In 1972, the year Title IX was passed, 15 year-old Jenny Campbell earned a place as left wing on her high school's previously all male soccer team. She traveled with the team on a five week tour of England and Scotland. She knew her teammates weren't happy about having her on the team, but she never guessed how hateful some of them would be

"Hey ‘Lasto! What did you say to her to get her so upset?" She heard someone call as she reached the staircase. She leaped up the stairs as the first sob wrenched its way up from her diaphragm. Reaching her room she collapsed on the bed, struggling to breathe between the spasms that wracked her body. Her fit of crying was so violent she was getting nauseated. Breathe deeply, she commanded herself, calm down. She gulped air and hiccupped. Slowly now, breathe in and let it out. She concentrated on this for two minutes until she calmed down to weeping weakly. She heard the pounding of footsteps on the stairs outside her room and then a thunk. The footsteps retreated back down the stairs. Curious and still sniffling she opened the door. On a chest in the hallway sat a pint of beer. No one was in sight. She regarded it suspiciously. They probably spit in it or even pissed in it. I wouldn't put anything past those bastards, she thought. She left it there.
Her bitterness was overwhelming. It frightened her to feel such fury. She wanted to hurt them, torture them, make them scream in pain, get down on their knees and beg her forgiveness. She indulged in sadistic fantasies for a few moments, but it didn't make her feel any better. She didn't like feeling that angry. Her whole body was taut with rage. She tried deep breathing again, and began to relax slightly. She clenched her toes and released, then her calves, working her way up her body in an exercise she learned in drama class. It was just beginning to really work when someone knocked on her door. Maybe it's Jackson, she hoped, getting up to answer the door. She was astounded to see Paul standing there.

A Minority Of One Or What Are You Doing Mixed In With That Bunch Miss? edition by Sharen Conner Children eBooks

This book was age appropriate as a coming of age for young ladies. It shows that assertiveness on the part of females will have its trails and tribulations. The protagonist is the only female on an all boys (male) team. Right away one can see all of the potential issues that could take place, and so they did. This is a fast paced tome that is well worth the read. Conner shows us that there are different emotions that bubble to the surface as the team travels in a foreign country. It is wonderful in the sense that Conner can share with us how the different characters interact on several levels. All the while one thanks this is about a soccer team, yet it is way more than that. I highly recommend this book.

A Minority Of One Or What Are You Doing Mixed In With That Bunch Miss? edition by Sharen Conner Children eBooks Reviews

This is a quick, light read for any age! It made me giggle at times. It also made me remember my childhood as a goalie! I would recommend this book for any girl who is trying to make a difference in her life. I think any adult who has ever had to overcome equality in life will like it also!
This will be a reminder for older readers of the time before Title IX,when girls' opportunities to play sports were very limited. Today's teen-aged females will find it hard to believe that there was a time when girls had to fight to play sports. Jenny Campbell loved soccer, was good at it, and fought to play - the only girl on a boys' team. You will cheer for her, laugh with her, and at times shake your head over her decisions.
This would be a great book for a mother and daughter to read and discuss!
